How to Link Google Ads to Google Analytics 4

For digital marketers, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Ads are essential tools. While each is powerful alone, linking GA4 with Google Ads unlocks a new level of insight into how users interact with your website after clicking on ads. Here’s a simple guide to help you connect these platforms and make the most of your data.

Why Link Google Ads to GA4?

Combining GA4 and Google Ads gives you a more complete view of your user’s journeys, helping you make smarter, data-driven decisions. Here are the main benefits:

  • See the Full Customer Journey: Find out how users behave after clicking on an ad. See which campaigns are most effective, what users do before converting, and what actions they take post-conversion.

  • Easier Audience Targeting: Create custom audiences in GA4 based on user behaviour, then use these audiences in Google Ads for precise remarketing. Reach users who have already shown interest in your brand, making your ads more relevant.

  • Simplified Reporting: GA4 brings Google Ads data into one place, so you can access key metrics like clicks, costs, and ROAS without switching back and forth between platforms. You’ll find all the data you need to fine-tune your campaigns.

How can you link Google ads to GA4?

Connecting these accounts is simple and takes just a few steps:

Step 1.

Open GA4 and Go to Admin
In your GA4 property, go to Admin > Property Settings > Product Link and select Google Ads Linking.

Step 2.

Start the Link
Click Link and select the Google Ads account you want to connect. Make sure you have Editor permission in GA4 and Admin access in Google Ads.

Step 3.

Adjust Settings
Turn on Personalised Advertising and Auto-Tagging (recommended for seamless tracking). Auto-tagging will automatically track ad interactions, saving you from manually tagging each link.

Step 4.

Submit the Link
Once everything looks correct, click Submit. It may take up to 24 hours for your Google Ads data to show up in GA4.

Where to Find Google Ads Data in GA4

After linking, Google Ads data is available in GA4 in several places:

  • Acquisition Overview: See a summary of how your Google Ads campaigns are performing, including key metrics like clicks, cost-per-click, and ROAS.

  • Explorations: Use GA4’s Explorations feature to build custom analyses with Google Ads data, allowing you to dig deeper into campaign performance.

  • Dedicated Google Ads Report: Located under Advertising > Planning > Google Ads, this report gives detailed data on ad clicks, costs, ad groups, and keywords.

Understanding Discrepancies Between GA4 and Google Ads Data

It’s common for data to look slightly different between GA4 and Google Ads. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Different Attribution Models: Google Ads generally uses a last-click attribution model, while GA4 spreads credit across all touchpoints, meaning conversion counts may differ.

  • Data Collection Differences: GA4 counts sessions, whereas Google Ads counts clicks. If a user clicks on an ad multiple times, Google Ads records each click, while GA4 counts one session.

  • UTM Tagging: To avoid errors, make sure Auto-Tagging is enabled in Google Ads. Manual tagging can cause inconsistencies.

  • Time Zones and Sampling: Mismatched time zones and data sampling in GA4 can cause minor variations. Try aligning time zones and exporting large datasets to BigQuery to avoid sampling issues.

Knowing these differences can help you interpret data accurately, focusing on larger trends even if minor numbers don’t match perfectly.

Linking from Google Ads and Importing Conversions

If you prefer, you can also link your accounts from Google Ads:

  1. Go to Tools & Settings > Linked Accounts.

  2. Under Google Analytics (GA4) & Firebase, select your GA4 property and click Link.

  3. Import audiences if you like, and activate Apps and Web Metrics to track conversions.
